So I dig around the web and find some version 4.x drivers. I uninstall 5.2, install 4.x. Now I can assign tab and such, and also programs like GMUD (a telnet client) now scroll with the wheel. I don't use Mac Mice because I use multi-button mice with with scroll-wheel. As does most of the planet nowadays. But it is a very good quality optical mouse (as opposed to the M$ Intellimouse Explorer which is very good operationally and ergonomically, but lousy quality. I had two, they both lasted about a year.

It's strange though, that under the old kernel, kudzu detects a microsoft intellimouse explorer, where as under the new kernel, it doesn't detect it at all. WHy why why? That is the real question here. So now that I have it working...I'm still not sure why it is (see previous "why why why").
